All About Mead
Mead, the oldest alcoholic beverage in the world, is originally made simply from honey, yeast, and water. We sell a whole selection of meads and mead type drinks here at Independent spirit of Bath. It's likely by sheer conincidence that so many different societies developed some form of mead at around the same time. Thinning honey with water and letting it sit, allowing wild yeasts to turn the sugar into alcohol. We wouldn't have understood the science but its potent abilities would have not gone unnoticed. The Bath Syllabub
Originating in 16th-century England, the syllabub was initially renowned as a delightful and frothy beverage enjoyed by the aristocracy. This charming concoction consisted of a harmonious blend of sweetened sack wine or beer with the addition of full cream milk and whipped to perfection until it formed a light, ethereal froth.
Parade Gardens
Across from our little shop, Independent spirit of Bath, we have the historic Parade Gardens. The gardens have a rich history that dates back to the early 18th century and is the centrepiece of the terrace walk area. In 1709, Richard 'Beau' Nash encouraged Thomas Harrison to build an Assembly Room for fashionable visitors to the spa.
Sally Lunn
Sally Lunn was a legendary figure associated with a type of sweet bun that originated in the English city of Bath. According to popular tradition, Sally Lunn was a French Huguenot refugee who arrived in Bath in the late 17th century and began making and selling the buns from a small bakery in the city.
